Steve Edberg has been an active amateur astronomer since 1966 and has worked professionally in the field since 1970. After college and graduate school at UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, and UCLA he worked at San Fernando Observatory before joining the Galileo project at JPL in 1979
In 1981 he moved to the International Halley Watch as Coordinator for Amateur Observations and newsletter editor. He has authored the International Halley Watch Amateur Observers' Manual for Scientific Comet Studies, numerous other Halley Watch publications, and has co-authored with David Levy Observing Comets, Asteroids, Meteors, and the Zodiacal Light, recently published by Cambridge University Press, and other books. Since 1986 he has worked on the Comet Rendezvous/Asteroid Flyby, Cassini, and Galileo projects. He served as spacecraft/ground coordinator for Galileo studies of the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter. He is presently the Senior Mission Scientist on the Cassini Program.

He is an astrophotographer and telescope builder. His photography, research, instruments, and writing have appeared in professional journals, in popular periodicals, and in several books. Edberg is also heavily involved in public outreach in astronomy, coordinating what many consider the largest starparty for astronomers of all levels, the RTMC Astronomy Expo held each Memorial Day Weekend on Big Bear Mountain in Southern California.

He has been honored by the International Astronomical Union with the naming of a minor planet, 3672 Stevedberg and has received a NASA Exceptional Service Medal and JPL Award for Excellence. As a side activity he has observed total solar eclipses since 1974, and he organizes and leads solar eclipse expeditions for serious observers. He has led several other astronomical expeditions as well.
