Astronomy Magazine and the company AstroMedia was launched by Steve Walther, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a passion for the stars in the summer of 1973. As the magazine grew in popularity, Walther tragically became ill and passed away in 1977. Afterwards Richard Berry took over as Editor and Bob Mass as publisher.
In the mid-1980's Kalmbach Publishing Co. purchased AstroMedia's Astronomy Magazine and its three other astronomy publications (Deep Sky, Odyssey, and Telescope Making). In 2002 David Eicher became Editor of the magazine.
