The BBAA's motto is "Bringing Astronomy to the People of Hampton Roads" and we have many events throughout the year to advance that goal. On "Astronomy Day" we team up with the Virginia Beach Public Library to celebrate astronomy. Our members set up filtered telescopes to view the sun and the moon, and take the opportunity to talk to library patrons about our hobby. We do many events throughout the year with the Departments of Parks and Recreation for Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. We also are building a relationship with the Norfolk Botanical Gardens and have done several evening events we call "Gardenstars". You'll often find our members at the local planetariums too, where we set up telescopes and interface with the public.

This yearly event is free and open to the public and is a celebration of science and astronomy set among an atmosphere of music and art. Highlights from the first event was the conjunction with the [[RTMC Astronomy Expo]] and the [[Big Bear Solar Observatory]], STEM hands-on activities and learning for students and educators. An amazing line-up of special presentations by renown astronauts, scientists, and astronomers. Viewing of the sun live through a safe-filtered telescope, exploring the stars through powerful telescopes, exploring the microscopic world, building a rocket, control robots, meeting an astronaut, asking a scientist a question about the universe.

The Back Bay Amateur Astronomers is a group of amateur astronomers drawn together by a common interest in observational astronomy. The society was founded December 14, 1978 by members devoted to teaching the many aspects of observational astronomy. The BBAA's motto is "Bringing Astronomy to the People of Hampton Roads" and we have many events throughout the year to advance that goal. On "Astronomy Day" we team up with the Virginia Beach Public Library to celebrate astronomy. AstronomyOutreach network offers a free lecture referral service for public educators in astronomy. While we do not accept compensation for the referral, we do work with the speakers and the organizers who wish to invite them to lecture to arrive at a fair honorarium that works for both parties if requested. Requests for speakers to give live online lectures or in-person lectures should be prepared to provide travel (if required), expenses, and an honorarium paid in advance.
